Who is my Website for?

Let me give you a minute to think…

The reason I ask is that having worked in online marketing and web system development since before Google even existed (yes, I am that old!) I’ve seen the move away from design, functionality and even usability to the new focus of search engine results.  I’m not saying the others don’t feature; it’s just that we seem to care less about them.

The most common question asked is “will my site be on page one of Google?”  this actually equates to “will Google decide that my website is one of the top ten (out of the millions of possible) results for a users search term”  you will see why the only short (and honest) answer to that question is “I don’t know”.

What happens if we ask a different question?

Try these…

  • How do I let people know about my website?
  • Where are the right places to advertise my website so that prospective customers can find it?
  • What would I like visitors to do once they are on my website?
  • What percentage of my website visitors are doing what the site is designed for them to do?
  • How do I improve that figure?

Asking the right questions can transform your business!

The questions above can all be answered simply and very often you can start to answer them yourself with no outside help required!  You see once you stop chasing the goose laying the golden eggs you will see there are lots of ways you can create website traffic and customers without worrying about competing with 1000’s of other websites to be chosen as one of the top results on Google.  Chances are Google already sees you as the best result when people search for your company name. 

  • Your first job is making sure that people know who you are and what you do.
  • Your second job is making sure your website speaks directly to your ideal customers and makes it easy for them to buy from you. 

For most small businesses, just doing those two things really well is enough to make a difference.

What difference would it make to your business if a quarter of the monthly website visitors became customers?

I’m not saying that you shouldn’t aim to be found by search engines or that you shouldn’t work on your website so that it is optimised for the right phrases.  I’m just saying there might be a better place to start the process.  Once you have a really good understanding of what your prospects are looking for and have ensured that your website makes it easy for them to become your customers moving on to getting the traffic is the natural next step…
