Twitter & Google Have Kissed and Made Up

Back in 2009 until about 2011 Google and Twitter had a tempestuous relationship.

In their early ďdatingĒ days Twitter allowed Google access to its posts data (called Firehouse) which meant that search results would appear in Google almost the instant they went up on Twitter.
However Twitter was young & still growing and following a fall out they broke up and the agreement was terminated. (much to the frustration of  Google)

Anyway in February of this year they announced that they had got back together  and were going to give their relationship another go!

So what are the implications, why does this matter to Google?

Well unlike previously when Google had to process about 9,000 tweets a second, they now have complete access to the Firehose Data.

Given that Google loves freshness, you donít get much fresher than Twitter, where even news organisations go to get the latest information straight from the horses mouths so to speak.

So what does Twitter get out of this relationship? Quite simply exposure, whilst obviously a large company Twitter (out of the top five social media sites) still only has the smallest market share. Partnering with an older, wiser (?) more experienced partner will give it a big ďleg upĒ in the online world.

So what does this mean for your business?

Social Media and Search are more and more intertwined than ever before. With Twitter poised on the edge of explosive growth, there has never been a better time to get acquainted with Twitter, learn how to use it and use it well.

Why?

  • Its simple
  • Itís global,
  • Itís hash tagged,
  • Itís user-generated
  • Itís non-stop.

If thereís a news story happening in the world, you can be sure itís happening on Twitter somewhere, and you can find it with the click of a button.

The partnership with Google is only going to improve this fact, with the most likely upshot being that relevant content will appear in the Google results as it is posted!!! A Marketers dream!
So take advantage of the coming upswing on Twitter to get visibility in Google search for your business.
